Job Title: Workshop Lead

Location: Lewes, East Sussex
Position Type: part-time, 4 days per week, 9am-6pm. Permanent.
Salary: Hourly rate pay, equivalent to approximately £43,000 per anum pro rata, overtime rates at 1.5x pay.

We are a small team specializing in the construction of high-quality bespoke costume for film and TV productions. We are looking for an experienced Workshop Lead to join us in continuing to deliver exceptional costume making services to film and TV productions.

Position Overview:
We are looking for a skilled and proactive Workshop Lead to support the owner of the company in overseeing the daily operations of our workshop. You will be responsible for managing a team of exceptionally skilled costume makers, ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the high standard expected. This role is ideal for someone with strong leadership abilities, an eye for detail, and a comprehensive knowledge of costume construction techniques across a variety of making disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the workshop owner in managing the workshop's operations and project timelines.

  • Lead, motivate, and support a team of highly experienced costume makers, as well as freelancers and juniors depending on the needs of the project at hand.

  • Oversee the making, alteration, and finishing of costumes to ensure they meet the high standards expected.

  • Responsibility for ensuring that deadlines are met without compromise to the quality of work delivered, which will involve working occasional overtime as needed.

  • Coordinate with production costume teams to ensure good communication and efficient workflow.

  • Track the progress of multiple projects and provide regular updates to the workshop owner.

  • Troubleshoot any issues related to costume construction.

  • Organize and maintain the workshop space, ensuring tools and materials are properly stored and accounted for.

  • Ensure that health and safety protocols are followed, and promote a positive and safe working environment.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience in costume construction, with a strong history of previous work on film and TV productions.

  • Demonstrated leadership and team management experience, with the ability to lead a team of highly experienced makers.

  • Knowledge of the unique demands of working on film and TV productions, with experience working to tight deadlines and fast turnaround times.

  • Excellent knowledge of costume-making techniques, fitting, and finishing.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a love of your craft.

  • Ability to remain calm and good humoured under pressure.

Desirable:

  • Pattern drafting experience.

  • A qualification in costume making, or a related field.

  • Knowledge of basic machinery maintenance.
